FRED CUMING RA
We are thrilled to present a show of new work by Fred Cuming. For visitors to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Fred's work needs no introduction. One of Britain's most distinguished contemporary landscape painters, he has shown annually at the Royal Academy since his election as an RA in 1974. In 2001 he was the featured artist in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, and had an entire gallery within the show dedicated to his work. This exhibition includes recent paintings of the coastal landscape of southern England, particularly the area around Fred's hometown of Rye in Sussex. A feeling of light and psace pervades the work. Big open skies dominate the compositions, and the figures seem humbled by the power of the elements around them. The seemingly effortless way he captures a floating cloud or sunset shows he is a master of his chosen genre. The impressionistic paintings are fautless in their field and evoke an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. A delightful and specifically English world is called to mind: capturing both the mists and atmospheric landscapes of the coast, and the human activity around the seaside involving piers, harbours, ferries and lightouses. |
