Annabelle Hulbert's work is organic and intuitive: the first mark of colour dictates what will follow. She paints with earthy tones such as raw umber combined with rich reds. Her use of colour forms distinctive areas in the paintings, which look like cells containing ‘living stories’.

Annabelle was born in 1973 in South Devon and studied art at Coventry University graduating in 1996. After graduating Annabelle moved to Belfast in Northern Ireland where she has worked ever since.

Annabelle's work is organic and intuitive: ‘the first mark of colour dictates what will follow’.

She paints with earthy tones, raw umber and ochres often in conjunction with rich reds and magentas.

Her colours form distinctive areas in the paintings, which look, like cells containing a ‘living story’.

The work grows out of the abstraction, reminiscent of amoeboid shapes and figurative elements of nature such as plants, fruits, flowers and snakes. These elements give to her painting a surreal quality. It is ‘self directed’ and it helps Annabelle to conjugate visually her subconscious images to the pictorial space. ‘Painting is a place were experiences and memories are re-lived and ‘worked out’.

Her imagery is drawn from many diverse sources, these  – sources can be as diverse as the characters in the ‘Garden of Eden’ to the contents of her own home.
